From bedtime stories to published books

The Reverend Wilbert Awdry developed the earliest stories while entertaining his son Christopher. The Three Railway Engines was published in 1945 and introduced Edward, Gordon and Henry. Thomas received his own book, Thomas the Tank Engine, in 1946.

Wilbert Awdry wrote 26 books between 1945 and 1972. Christopher Awdry later continued the series with 16 more books published between 1983 and 2011, bringing the main numbered collection to 42.

02

A railway world with real rules

The stories use fictional engines but draw heavily on British railway practice, locomotive classes and operating problems. Breakdowns, signalling, branch-line duties and rivalry are not just scenery: they drive the plots and give Sodor a consistent railway logic.

The books also contain characters and locations that never became prominent on television. That is why a Railway Series character list is broader than a list based only on the TV programme.

03

How the books relate to television

The television adaptation began in 1984 and based many early episodes directly on Railway Series stories. It simplified, reordered or combined some material, so book and screen continuity should not be treated as exactly the same.

Use “Railway Series” when you want the original books and illustrations. Use “model series” for the physical-model television production and “CGI series” for the later computer-animated television years.
