When the CGI era started
Season 12 was the bridge between methods: physical engine models and sets remained, while CGI faces and human figures were added. Full computer animation arrived with the 2009 special Hero of the Rails and television series 13.
The CGI production retained Sodor, familiar engine numbers and many established characters, but it enabled broader facial movement, walking human characters and camera angles that were difficult with miniature sets.
What changed during series 13–24
The CGI era was not one unchanging block. Creative teams, episode structures and locations evolved across twelve numbered series. The 2018 Big World! Big Adventures! period added international travel and changed the Steam Team, bringing Nia and Rebecca into central roles.
This is the era most people mean when they search for “Thomas CGI series”, “CGI era” or individual later characters. Adding a series number gives more precise results.
Is All Engines Go part of the CGI series?
No. Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go began in 2021 as a separate 2D animated reimagining. It uses familiar names and ideas, but its visual language, movement and continuity differ from the original series.
Thomas & Friends: Railway Stories is the name of Thomas’s new 2026 screen chapter. The official Really Helpful Engines trailer is here. Start with the trailer, then check what the announcement confirms for viewing and what still depends on your country.
