Nia’s first appearance and role
Nia was introduced in the 2018 feature-length story Big World! Big Adventures! and became part of the Steam Team in television series 22. Her arrival belongs to the global-travel phase of the CGI programme, when Thomas visited countries outside Sodor and met engines from different railway traditions.
She is presented as capable, practical and thoughtful. Her Kenyan origin and orange livery make her easy to distinguish from the earlier blue, green and red members of the main cast.
How to recognise Nia
Look for an orange tank engine with yellow and red decorative details and the number 18. She is a tank engine, so she carries water around her boiler rather than in a separate tender. That silhouette immediately separates her from Rebecca, who is a much larger tender engine.
Toy versions can vary in scale, facial style and detail. Nia’s name and number identify the character, but the product line—such as wooden, push-along or motorized—determines which track and couplings it uses.
Nia in CGI and All Engines Go
The Nia introduced in 2018 is part of the original programme’s full-CGI continuity. All Engines Go, launched in 2021, is a separate 2D animated reimagining with a younger visual style. Nia appears there too, but the design and storytelling format are different.
That distinction matters when searching for episodes, images or toys. Add “CGI”, “series 22” or “All Engines Go” to a search when you need one specific version.
