All new 2026 track sets, Metal Collection engines and Motorized engines are designed to work together.
Which Thomas trains really work together?
Track, wheels and couplings are three different things. This guide shows what fits, what needs an adapter and what should stay separate.
Compare the two ranges in front of you
The result separates track fit from coupling fit—because an engine can ride the rails and still be unable to pull the wagon.
Material, rail spacing and the connector at the end of a track piece decide whether layouts can join.
Magnet, round magnet or plastic hook decides whether engines and wagons can form one train.
Easy Connect starts a new family in autumn 2026
Mattel unified the new metal and motorized ranges on one track system. Track adapters preserve a route to older layouts, but vehicle couplers changed.
Mattel says new sets connect to most pre-autumn-2026 plastic Thomas track using an adapter supplied with the relevant set. Wood is excluded.
New Metal and Motorized vehicles couple to each other magnetically. A 2014–2025 plastic-hook wagon does not attach directly.
Mattel confirms new 2026 engines run on all Thomas plastic track except wood. It does not promise that every older engine negotiates every new Easy Connect feature.
New engine on an older plastic layout: yes, according to Mattel. New layout joined to older plastic track: yes, with the appropriate adapter. New magnetic engine coupled to an older hook wagon: no, not directly.
What kind of track do you have?
Choose the closest description. Packaging names changed often; the track end and coupler are more reliable clues than the logo.
Easy Connect
Broad, child-friendly connectors, built-in re-railing guides and red interaction points. New vehicles have magnetic couplers.
- Packaging says “Easy Connect” or “New 2026”.
- Works with new Metal and Motorized engines.
- Older layouts connect only through the supplied adapter.
TrackMaster Revolution / Motorized / Push Along
Moulded plastic rails, often grey with coloured sections. Motorized trains and the wider 2019–2025 Push Along vehicles share this track family and plastic hook couplers.
- A switch or lever on top usually means Motorized.
- Small metal engines with hooks are Push Along.
- Pre-2014 TrackMaster needs adapter track.
Plarail / Motor Road & Rail
Bright blue channel track with male/female tabs. This is the Japanese Plarail family, sold internationally as TOMY/Tomica World and later Motor Road & Rail.
- Plarail and TOMY Motor Road & Rail are close relatives.
- Original 2007 TrackMaster joins with a dedicated adapter.
- Modern grey Motorized track is a different system.
Wooden Railway
Classic wooden pieces with round peg-and-socket ends generally work with BRIO-style wooden railways. The 2018–2021 “Wood” line has a different plastic-ended connector.
- Classic Wooden Railway: bare wooden connector at each end.
- Thomas Wood: wide plastic connector; use an adapter.
- Motorized plastic engines are not intended for wooden track.
Bachmann model railway
Two metal rails and a mains-powered controller indicate model railway—not preschool track. Measure the distance between the inner rail faces before buying.
- 16.5 mm: OO or HO.
- 9 mm: N or OO9/HOn30; same gauge, different scale and couplers.
- 45 mm: Bachmann Large Scale / G-gauge track.
MINIS / My First / chunky preschool ranges
Very small MINIS, large My First toys and novelty launchers are self-contained play systems. Similar character names do not mean standard track compatibility.
- MINIS only fit playsets specifically marked MINIS.
- My First Thomas uses its own chunky format.
- Do not use visual size alone—check the line name or product code.
Compatibility by Thomas range
These are the useful “compatibility islands”. An adapter can join track ends, but it does not automatically change wheel geometry or couplers.

TrackMaster Revolution · Motorized · Push Along (2014–2025)
TrackMaster Revolution began in 2014 and was later labelled Motorized. The 2019 Push Along die-cast line was widened specifically for this track and its hook-style rolling stock.
- Track
- 2014–2025 moulded plastic TrackMaster/Motorized track.
- Coupler
- Plastic hooks; Push Along (2019–2025) attaches to Motorized vehicles.
- Adapter
- Official pieces join it to pre-2014 TrackMaster; Easy Connect sets use a new adapter in the other direction.

Plarail and international TOMY Motor Road & Rail share the blue channel-track heritage. Vehicle and accessory variations mean “same family” is safer than “everything guaranteed”.

Brown/grey 2007 TrackMaster
The first TrackMaster system changed the track connector but sold official adapters back to Motor Road & Rail. It is not the same track as the 2014 Revolution redesign.

Classic Wooden Railway
The familiar wooden peg-and-socket track standard. Generally cross-compatible with BRIO-style track; bridge and tunnel clearances can still differ.

Vehicles remained part of the wooden play family, but track received a proprietary plastic connector. Sets and destinations included adapters for classic wooden track.
Adapter needed for trackWooden Railway revival
Returned to the classic wooden track connector. The line was discontinued in 2025, so current stock is limited and much is second-hand.
Classic connector restoredFisher-Price recalled Wooden Railway Troublesome Truck & Crates HBJ89 and Troublesome Truck & Paint HBJ90 in 2023 because a magnet housing could loosen. Stop using an affected item and follow Mattel’s recall instructions.
Official Mattel recall information ↗For Bachmann, the number of millimetres decides the track
Scale, gauge, electrical control and coupling type all matter. The shop marks these products 14+; they contain small parts and require adult model-railway setup.
| Range | Track gauge | What track fits? | Couplers & important caveat | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OO / HOapprox. 1:76 / 1:87 | 16.5 mm | Standard OO/HO two-rail track from brands such as Bachmann, Peco and Hornby. Check minimum curve radius. | Thomas models use European/British hook-and-loop or tension-lock style couplers; not automatically compatible with every US knuckle coupler. | View |
| N1:160 | 9 mm | Standard N track. Bachmann specifies 11.25-inch radius or larger for N Thomas. | Thomas N uses Rapido-style couplers; Bachmann warns they do not couple to every standard-line N model. | View |
| OO9 / HOn301:76 / 1:87 narrow gauge | 9 mm | Runs on N/OO9 track, but the bodies are much larger than N. Check tunnels, platforms and curve clearances. | International hook-and-loop couplers. Sharing 9 mm rails with N does not make the vehicles the same scale or a sensible mixed train. | View |
| Large Scalegarden railway | 45 mm | G-gauge / 45 mm two-rail track. Suitable indoors or outdoors where the individual product permits. | Thomas Large Scale couplers do not automatically work with Bachmann’s standard Large Scale rolling stock. | View |
A DCC-ready locomotive still runs on analogue DC out of the box unless its product page says a decoder is fitted. Do not place an analogue-only locomotive on a DCC layout without checking its manual.
N and OO9 share rail spacing, not body scale. OO9 represents narrow-gauge trains with larger bodies, so scenery clearance and coupling height differ.
OO and HO can share track gauge while using different proportions and coupling standards. Track compatibility does not guarantee train-to-train coupling.

Compatibility FAQ
Short answers for the combinations most often confused online and in second-hand listings.
Will Easy Connect work with my old Motorized track?
New Easy Connect sets are designed to join most pre-autumn-2026 plastic Thomas track through the appropriate adapter. Mattel also says new 2026 engines run on all Thomas track except wood. The new magnetic couplers still do not attach directly to old plastic-hook wagons.
Will every old engine run on every Easy Connect feature?
Do not assume that. Mattel clearly promises new vehicles on older plastic track and adapter-connected layouts, but does not make a universal reverse promise for every historical engine and interactive feature.
Can Push Along couple to Motorized?
The 2019–2025 Push Along range was designed with wider chassis for TrackMaster/Motorized track and couplers that attach to Motorized vehicles. The 2026 Metal Collection changes to magnets.
Are Take Along and Take-n-Play the same?
They are separate generations, but Take-n-Play was designed as the compatible successor to Take Along. Adventures changed the coupling and track connections; a short-lived official adapter pack was needed to bridge them.
Does Wooden Railway fit BRIO or IKEA track?
Classic Wooden Railway and the 2022 revival use the familiar wooden railway connector and generally fit BRIO-style layouts. Height, tight curves, tunnels and special destinations can still vary. The 2018–2021 Thomas Wood track uses a different connector and needs adapters.
Is blue TOMY track the same as TrackMaster?
It is closely related to Plarail/Motor Road & Rail, but original TrackMaster changed the track end and used a dedicated adapter. TrackMaster Revolution from 2014 is another redesign again.
Can N and OO9 trains share 9 mm track?
They share rail spacing, but not scale, coupling height or clearance needs. OO9 bodies are much larger because they represent narrow-gauge trains in OO scale. Treat them as separate train systems even if a test vehicle can physically roll on the rails.
