Common questions about Thomas track compatibility

In general, no. Each Thomas track system uses different rail widths, connector types, and scales. The one exception is Wooden Railway, which uses a universal connector that works with most other wooden railway brands like BRIO, IKEA LILLABO, and Bigjigs. Plastic systems (Easy Connect, TrackMaster, Adventures, Plarail) are all incompatible with each other.

TrackMaster is being phased out by Mattel in 2026 and replaced by the new Easy Connect system. Existing TrackMaster tracks and trains still work fine, but no new TrackMaster products are being manufactured. Easy Connect is not backwards-compatible with TrackMaster -- they use different rail widths and connector types.

No. Each Bachmann scale uses a different track gauge (the distance between the rails). HO/OO is 16.5mm, N is 9mm, and G is 45mm. They are completely different sizes and cannot be mixed. However, within each scale, Bachmann is fully compatible with all other manufacturers of the same gauge.

Yes! Fisher-Price Wooden Railway uses the same universal wooden connector found in BRIO, IKEA LILLABO, Bigjigs, and most other wooden train sets. Tracks, bridges, and accessories from these brands can all be mixed and matched freely.

Your existing TrackMaster setup will continue to work, so there is no need to replace it immediately. However, if you are starting fresh or want to expand, we recommend Easy Connect as it is the future of the Thomas toy line. Keep in mind they cannot be combined -- if you start Easy Connect, it will be a separate layout from any TrackMaster you own.
